I see no point in depressing myself about the climate. But no one can ignore how dry Scotland has been this month, or the lack of rain forecast.

Concerns can be turned to the positive. Can even become fun. The water-saving routines I enforce around the house amuse me. Who knew how much can be collected waiting for the hot tap to run hot? Or the cold to run cold? Nobody ever died waiting until the washing machine had a full load. Ditto the dishwasher. A shorter shower becomes a personal best to achieve. All this makes me feel good, if not sanctimonious.

This country possesses both a publicly owned water supply and a monstrous complacency about how much water we have. Scots take low
